HIV DNA PCR Testing (10 Day HIV Testing)
This test can detect the presence of the HIV virus 10 days after exposure. PCR stands for Polymerase Chain Reaction and is a testing method that extracts and amplifies the genetic material of an organism (in this case HIV). Because HIV testing using PCR DNA checks for the virus itself, the window period is shorter compared with other types of HIV testing. This means it can provide a positive result sooner than other HIV tests.
However, HIV PCR testing is not 100% reliable and has a higher incidence of false positives than other HIV tests. Furthermore, the results can take up to 7 working days. These drawbacks mean that fewer people are being advised to use the 10 day PCR test to diagnose HIV. If you do receive the 10 day test, you should follow up with the HIV Duo Test at 28 days after the suspected infection. Like other HIV tests, a blood sample is sent to our laboratory and the results should be available within 7 working days.
This tests is available as part of our Early Detection Screen along with Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C..
