STD Symptoms, Non-Specific Urethritis Symptoms & Non-Specific Urethritis Test London

What is it

NSU is the most common acute bacterial STI found throughout the UK. It occurs primarily in men and is caused by several bacteria including Chlamydia, Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma. Viruses, parasites, and even allergic reactions to soaps etc. can cause the condition. By definition, Gonorrhoea is not a factor in NSU, and although this is a male condition, the bacteria involved can be transmitted to women, which can lead to conditions such as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease and infertility. It is passed through unprotected sex.

Other Adverse Consequences

Can include epididymo-orchitis (infection of the testicles and spermatic cords), acute prostatitis (infection of the prostate), subfertility and occasionally Reiter's Syndrome (an immunological phenomenon with conjunctivitis and joint pains). The likelihood of all of these can be greatly reduced by prompt treatment of any infections.

Symptoms

Burning sensation when passing urine, although 50% of men will not have any symptoms.

Test

Swab test, no urine should be passed 3-4 hours prior to the test to allow for ample bacteria to accumulate.

Treatment

Simple antibiotics.
