Gonorrhoea is rapidly developing resistance to antibiotics, with some cases already proving impossible to treat. According to a study by the World Health Organization (WHO), the situation is “fairly grim” for those attempting to combat the infection, the spread of which is fuelled by a decline in condom use.
Analysing data from 77 countries, the WHO discovered widespread resistance to antibiotics, including three cases – in France, Spain and Japan, respectively – where the infection was totally untreatable. The organisation is now warning that it is “only a matter of time” before last-resort Gonorrhoea drugs become completely ineffective.
Dr Theodora Wi, from the WHO, told reporters that she feared the study’s findings would only be ‘the tip of the iceberg.’
She said: “Gonorrhoea is a very smart bug, every time you introduce a new class of antibiotics to treat it, the bug becomes resistant. The scale of the problem is unknown since systems to diagnose and report untreatable infections are lacking in lower-income countries, where Gonorrhoea is actually more common.”
Often symptomless, Gonorrhoea is a highly contagious infection that increases the risk of contracting HIV. It is spread by unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sexual intercourse with an infected person, and can also lead to ectopic pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and infertility.
Getting tested is the only way to be certain of your Gonorrhoea status, protecting both your own health and that of any current or future partners. Better2Know has a range of testing options for Gonorrhoea, along with a host of other STIs. Using either a urine sample, or a swab of the throat, vagina or rectum, we can test you for Gonorrhoea individually or as part of a combination of tests, known as a screen. These tests can be performed at home, as well as clinics and nurse stations nationwide, with results available within five working days from the sample’s arrival at the laboratory – depending on your selected test or screen.
For those who would like to know their results even sooner, we also offer Instant Gonorrhoea testing, which provides results while you wait in the clinic. With this popular testing option, you will receive the analysis of your swab sample within 20 minutes of being tested. If your Gonorrhoea test is reactive, Better2Know can arrange a doctor’s consultation to discuss the best course of action moving forward. We can also provide a prescription for the treatment you require at no additional cost. So, stay safe and get tested, it is always Better2Know.
