The answer according to the British Association of Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) is: “yes”.
“You are able to turn over partners more quickly with a dating app and the quicker you change partners the more likely you are to get infections” said Dr Peter Greenhouse (the Media Committee Chair for BASHH and Sexual Health Consultant).
STIs are rising across the UK with a 33% increase in cases of syphilis and a 19% increase in gonorrhoea in the last year. This may also be because more people are coming forward for testing so more STIs are being found. Many dating app creators say that they promote safe sex, and some apps will even show information on when subscribers last got tested. Other sites are specifically created for people who have tested positive for HIV, Herpes and HPV so that they can have a relationship without stigma or fear of passing it on.
If you use apps for meeting partners you should be aware that the more sexual partners you have, the more likely you are to catch an STI and pass it on to someone else. Condoms can help to reduce your risk (but not eliminate it), and having a regular STI test should be part of your sexual health routine. It is suggested that you have a test every time you change partners.
