A Herpes Test is one of our most popular tests at Better2Know. We offer testing at all of our locations. We can test you whether or not you have symptoms, and would suggest a blood test if you are not sure. All our tests distinguish between type 1 (oral herpes) and type 2 (genital herpes).
Herpes is a virus, and as such there is no cure for it. Once you have herpes, it will stay in your system for life and show up in future herpes blood tests. The good news is: most people with type 1 herpes find that after an initial outbreak, future outbreaks get milder and less frequent over time as your body learns how to deal with the virus. When you have an active herpes outbreak is when you are most likely to pass the virus to someone else. Type 1 can be passed on by kissing, which is why it is so common. Estimates vary but it is thought between 50% and 70% of the population of the UK have Type 1.
Herpes Type 2 is less common than Type 1, but easily passed on during sexual contact – by skin to skin contact. You do not need to have sex to pass it on. Using a condom can help, but if your outbreaks are somewhere that are not covered by the condom (whichever side of the barrier you are) then the virus can still be passed on.
With all herpes tests, it is not possible to tell when you caught the virus or who gave it to you. The positive thing to do is to make sure you understand what to do to minimise your chances of passing on Herpes to someone else. This is abut managing your symptoms, and taking creams and medications to keep outbreaks short and infrequent. Many remedies are available over the counter to help your body fight the outbreak quickly.
