HIV home testing has now been legal in the UK for just over a month, and in the US for much longer. This means that you can now legally buy a kit to get your HIV test in the comfort of your own home. This is to increase the opportunity for people to get tested by making it more accessible.
The problem is, that currently there is not a CE marked test, so any tests sold in the UK are low quality and therefore inaccurate, and it when it comes to your health, including long term conditions such as HIV, then it is important to know that you are getting the right result. No-one wants to be the person who gets the wrong result and then passes HIV on to someone else unknowingly.
In the US, there are saliva tests available over the counter (so you still need to ask a pharmacist to get one). The tests are around 90% accurate, which means that 1 in 10 people are getting the wrong result. Normally it is saying you are positive, when you are not, and they always advise repeat testing if you are HIV positive on a saliva test. However, compare the 90% accuracy with the Better2Know tests which are around 96% accurate at 10 days, rising to 99.8% at 28 days. Better2Know provides you a far higher level of certainty of your test result. If you are using the test before having unprotected sex with a new partner, we would suggest that you both come in for a blood test. We have several clinics doing rapid HIV tests around the country where you can get your results while you wait in around 20 minutes.
With Better2Know, if you do test positive then we will help you with a free repeat test, you can speak to one of the country’s leading HIV consultants and we will help to refer you for the next stages of your treatment, according to your preferences.
We have HIV testing across the UK with appointments available every day of the week.
