Here are some more frequently asked questions about STD and STI tests.
Q. How do I know if I am risk from an STI?
A. If you have had unprotected (no condom) vaginal or anal sex, with a new partner, then you are at risk. If you have unprotected oral (no dental dam) sex then you are at a lower risk. Some STIs can also be passed on through skin to skin contact. A condom does not provide full protection.
Q. If I am on the pill do I have any protection?
A. None at all.
Q. If I use a condom am I safe?
A. You are safer, but not safe. Syphilis, Herpes and Genital Warts can be passed on by skin to skin contact. If there is an infection in your partner, then you are at risk. Some infections can be transferred from blood to blood contact. So be careful if you have any cuts or sores. This risk includes HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.
Q. If my partner has my contact details can they find out my results?
A. Your Better2Know doctor will not tell anyone else your results. You can agree with your doctor how you will get your results, so that you can be sure that no one else will get your results. This can include a coded message for example “your work issue is all clear now”.
Q. I am really worried about HIV. Is it a death sentence?
A. If HIV is caught early enough, then no, it is not a death sentence. You should have a normal length of life. You will need to take medication every day, and you will see a doctor more often. We can make sure that you get a great referral to the next stage of your treatment.
