Sexual health clinics in the UK are struggling to cope with an increase in sexually transmitted infections, a health expert has warned. Despite the rise in attendance at sexual health clinics in England, a BBC investigation in June revealed that almost half the councils in England are planning to cut spending on sexual health services. As a result, some sexual health clinics are at risk of closure or reduced hours. With last year’s increase in Syphilis and Gonorrhoea cases, Dr Olwen Williams, president of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV, said: “cuts to sexual health funding have come at the worst possible time.”

Better2Know is the leading provider of private STI testing services in the UK. We provide confidential and anonymous testing for a wide range of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Herpes I/II, Syphilis and many other common STIs. Department of Health and Social Care spokesman said: “sexual health services and tests are now more widely available online which means people can get tested at a time that suits them”. Our private sexual health clinics are conveniently located throughout the country. You can arrange your confidential appointment for a time and date that suits your busy schedule. STI Transmission

You can contract sexually transmitted infections through unprotected sex. This includes vaginal, anal or oral sexual contact. Penetrative sex is not the only way to transmit or acquire STIs. Some infections can be transferred through skin-to-skin contact alone (such as Herpes I/II, Syphilis, and HPV/Genital Warts).

Condoms (male or female) are the only form of contraception that also prevent STIs. Other methods of contraception such as the pill, the implant, the injection or the coil will not protect you against sexually transmitted infections.

STI Symptoms

Many people can experience few or no symptoms, particularly in the early stages of infection. If symptoms are present, they can include:

  • Pain when urinating
  • Unusual discharge (yellow/green or foul odour)
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Genital or anal discomfort
  • Itching, redness or swelling (genital or anal)
  • An increased need to urinate more frequently
  • Blemishes (sores, ulcers, warts or blisters)
  • Illness (flu-like symptoms: fever or sore throat)

As mentioned earlier, a sexually transmitted infection may not always exhibit any symptoms. The only way to know if you have been infected is to get tested. No matter whether you are experiencing symptoms, have met a new partner, or are simply worried about your sexual health, you should get tested regularly and as soon as possible. Better2Know’s STI clinics have same or next day availability, so your private appointment can be arranged at your earliest convenience.

Long-term Health Risks

Untreated sexually transmitted infections can trigger further health complications. These include infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, epididymitis, pregnancy complications or certain cancers (such as HPV-associated cervical or rectal cancers).

You may also become more susceptible to acquiring other STIs, including HIV. Any current or future sexual partners are also at an increased risk of transmission. Some sexually transmitted infections require long-term management; an early diagnosis means you can receive the treatment you need as soon as possible, preventing detrimental damage to your system.

Better2Know’s Recommended STI Screens

Our wide range of STI screens combine our selection of confidential STI tests to provide a comprehensive view of your sexual health. These are designed, and regularly reviewed, by Better2Know’s medical specialists with your STI concerns in mind.

A suggested incubation period is associated with many of our confidential and anonymous STI screens. This is the time between potential exposure to infection and your Better2Know test or screen. This is to ensure the accuracy of your results.

Better2Know’s Blemish Screen tests for three sexually transmitted infections that are most commonly transferred through skin-to-skin contact:
