Sexual health clinics across the country are being forced to turn away patients, prompting fears of a drop in STI tests and screens. Recruitment freezes, underfunding, and large-scale changes to the commissioning of services has pushed the UK’s sexual health services to a ‘tipping point’, The Guardian revealed.
As a result, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) is warning of ‘a lack of public protection’ due to staff-shortages and outstretched resources, leaving patients unable to access sexual health services on a daily basis. A report carried out by the RCN found that the number of 18-to-24-year-olds that have been tested for Chlamydia has fallen by approximately 25% since the government transferred public health services to local authorities back in 2013. Despite such a reduction in testing, the latest figures recorded even more positive STI diagnoses.
Back in March, Better2Know brought you the news that Soho’s Dean Street Express GUM clinic was turning away over 1,000 patients every single day. That remains the case this morning.
Helen Donovan is the Professional Lead for Public Health at the RCN. When discussing the findings, she said: “This is a worrying picture of understaffed services going to extreme lengths to try to cope, even turning people away, the last thing a health professional ever wants to do. If people are not able to access services, then serious STIs could go undiagnosed and untreated. It is a major risk to public health.”
