Happy World Hepatitis Day Everyone!  Today 28 July, is World Hepatitis Day.  The aim of the day is to raise awareness of Hepatitis and to promote the elimination of the infection as a public health problem by 2030.

Better2Know can help you to get tested for:

  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Hepatitis C

All of the tests need a small blood sample.  We can get you your results instantly for Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C at our Instant STI test clinics, or results will be back the same day your sample is received in the laboratory.

Hepatitis A is usually passed on by eating something that has not been washed properly and is covered in faeces (poo) of someone who is infected.  It means it is more common in the Developing World.  However, it is increasingly thought of as an STI for Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) or anyone who practices anal and oral sex.  There is an effective vaccine.  Once you have had Hepatitis A, your body is usually immune to it, and you will not have it again.  Most people in the UK make a full recovery from Hepatitis A.  Please call our booking team for your test or vaccine.

Hepatitis B is highly contagious (easy to get) and is passed on through blood to blood contact.  Certain professionals (laboratory and health care workers) must have the vaccine before they can work.  Hepatitis B can be passed on during sexual intercourse if there is any blood to blood contact.  Hepatitis B can cause significant damage if left untreated. Most people in the UK will feel unwell for around 4 to 8 months but will make a full recovery.  If there are no signs of recovery there are medicines to help your body to fight the infection and prevent it from causing long term damage. Please call us to arrange your test or vaccine.

Hepatitis C is a long term condition.  There are new medications available which for the first time are offering significant relief to carriers of Hepatitis C.  It is passed on through blood to blood contact and is more common in MSM than other population groups in the UK.  People can have Hepatitis C for several years before diagnosis.  It is thought that half of the people with the virus in the UK do not know they have it and are not getting the medication they need.  To book your test, please call our booking team.
