{"id":2938,"date":"2015-01-16T06:48:39","date_gmt":"2015-01-16T06:48:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/?p=2938"},"modified":"2024-02-22T18:22:03","modified_gmt":"2024-02-22T18:22:03","slug":"hiv-transmission-a-new-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/hiv-transmission-a-new-study\/","title":{"rendered":"HIV Transmission &#8211; A New Study"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>A new report has concluded that &#8220;The Majority of new HIV infections among MSM in the United Kingdom in 2001-2020 is expected to be accounted for by a small group of highly sexually active individuals under the age of 35 years, living with undiagnosed&nbsp;HIV in the asymptomatic stage&#8221;. &nbsp;Let&#8217;s explain what that means&#8230;..<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/data-2-1-1024x518.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7650\" width=\"768\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/data-2-1-1024x518.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/data-2-1-300x152.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/data-2-1-768x388.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/data-2-1-1536x777.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/data-2-1-2048x1036.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The study modeled the spread of HIV in the UK in Men who have sex with Men (MSM) which includes gay men, transsexual men and the curious experimenters. &nbsp;It looked at those MSM who were newly infected with HIV, and found that 2 out 3 caught HIV from someone who did not know their HIV status. &nbsp;Almost a further 1 in 5 caught it from someone who knew they were HIV positive, but were not taking any medication. &nbsp;9 out of 10 new infections were in an ongoing sexual relationship with the person they caught it from. &nbsp;Most people were under the age of 35 when they caught HIV (62% of those in the sample). &nbsp;It is this younger age group who are most sexually active, with more partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asymptomatic means that currently the person with any infection (in this case HIV) does not know that they have the infection. It means they have no symptoms.
