{"id":472,"date":"2012-04-24T22:42:57","date_gmt":"2012-04-24T22:42:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.better2know.co.uk\/?p=472"},"modified":"2024-02-26T16:54:28","modified_gmt":"2024-02-26T16:54:28","slug":"hiv-couples-should-test-togthers-says-who","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/hiv-couples-should-test-togthers-says-who\/","title":{"rendered":"HIV: Couples should test together says WHO"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>New World Health Organisation (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/hiv\/pub\/guidelines\/9789241501972\/en\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WHO) guidelines<\/a> published this month recommend that couples get tested for HIV together, and where one partner tests positive, they recommend starting treatment immediately (Anti Retro-Viral drugs [ARVs]) immediately to suppress the body&#8217;s response to the virus to help to prevent transmission to the other partner.&nbsp; This is known as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aidsmap.com\/PrEP-acceptable-to-UK-gay-men-studies-find\/page\/2323923\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PrEP (Pre-Exposire Prophylaxis<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/relationship-3-2-1024x518.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7710\" width=\"768\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/relationship-3-2-1024x518.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/relationship-3-2-300x152.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/relationship-3-2-768x388.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/relationship-3-2-1536x777.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/relationship-3-2-2048x1036.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course the only safe sex is no sex, but for couples where one is HIV+, using a condom, and reducing the likelihood of transmission is the next best step, and should be used alongside regular HIV testing to help manage the risk of transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is thought that of the world&#8217;s population who are HIV+, half of them have partners who are not HIV+, but there remains a large number who do not know their HIV status (25% in the UK and 40% across the globe).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By keeping the CD4 count (a measure of the HIV+ partners immune status) above 350 (cells per micro Litre) this really helps reduce the chances of passing on the virus to their partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Better2Know has HIV testing across all its STD clinics with results in a couple of days.&nbsp;
