After a recent increase in infections from overseas, China has\nput in place new regulations surrounding the Covid-19 tests required before\nentering. Whilst many countries around the world already require proof of a\nnegative PCR test on arrival, China also requires proof of a negative IgM\nantibody test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chinese authorities state that \u201cIgM antibody test results are stable, and the passengers’ test results can be a lot more accurate if the two tests are combined.\u201d It is believed that \u201cdouble negative\u201d testing provides extra certainty as to whether a person has recently been infected with Covid-19, therefore lowering the transmission rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the difference between IgM and IgG antibodies?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The body produces IgM antibodies first in response to an\ninfection. However, these antibodies typically decline after the infection\npasses, so testing for IgM antibodies can indicate a recent or current\ninfection with Covid-19. On the other hand, IgG antibodies remain in the body\nfor longer, providing an indication of the body\u2019s long-term immune response to\nthe virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
