Thrush can cause your vagina to feel sore and itchy. It may produce a thick, white vaginal discharge and a burning sensation when urinating or having sex.&nbsp;It is, without a doubt, the most common cause of vulval or vaginal redness and itching. Most women with itching and redness will try to treat themselves for thrush first before deciding to get tested for STIs. This is not a bad idea, as these fungal infections are so much more common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/do-i-have-thrush-or-an-sti\/\"><strong>Find out more about how to distinguish thrush from an STI.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>STIs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Vaginal itching may be sign of an STI, but as it is such a common symptoms, it is much more likely to be due to something more innocent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If itching persists and doesn\u2019t respond to normal hygiene measures, it may be an idea to consider some of the following infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Itching caused by STIs can also be accompanied by other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/sti-symptoms-what-to-look-out-for\/\"><strong>STI symptoms<\/strong><\/a>, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Unusual vaginal discharge<\/li><li>Pain when urinating<\/li><li>Pain when having sex<\/li><li>Bleeding between periods<\/li><li>Sores or bumps in or around the vagina<\/li><li>Unusual vaginal odour<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the two most common STIs that can cause vaginal itching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Trichomonas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/std-sti-testing\/trichomonas\"><strong>Trichomonas<\/strong><\/a>, sometimes casually called \u201ctrich\u201d, is caused by a tiny parasite called&nbsp;<em>Trichomonas vaginalis<\/em>. Although it&#8217;s almost exclusive transmitted in vaginal sex, you can also get it through non-sexual means, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/can-you-get-trichomonas-without-having-sex\/\"><strong>sharing bathwater<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trichomonas can cause vaginal itching due to the inflammation and irritation it triggers in the vaginal tissues. Other symptoms might include unusual discharge, a fishy odour, and discomfort during urination or sex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Gardnerella<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/std-sti-testing\/trichomonas\"><strong>Gardnerella<\/strong><\/a>, is the bacteria that causes \u201cbacterial vaginosis\u201d&nbsp;(Gardnerella vaginalis). Although it is also almost exclusively transmitted in vaginal sex, but is mostly a problem in women, not men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It commonly produces&nbsp; an unusual discharge, an unpleasant odour, vulval and vaginal itching a redness. and discomfort during urination or sex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the other STIs that can cause vaginal itching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Chlamydia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/std-sti-testing\/chlamydia\"><strong>Chlamydia<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/a>is caused by the bacterium&nbsp;<em>Chlamydia trachomatis<\/em>. It often affects the cervix in women and the urethra in men, but it can also infect the rectum and throat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chlamydia can cause a range of symptoms, but when it produces changes in vaginal secretions, they can cause vaginal itching. This itching occurs because the infection leads to inflammation and irritation of the vaginal tissues. Other symptoms might include unusual discharge, pain during urination, and discomfort during sex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Gonorrhoea<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/std-sti-testing\/gonorrhoea\"><strong>Gonorrhoea<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/a>is caused by the bacterium&nbsp;<em>Neisseria gonorrhoeae<\/em>. Like Chlamydia, it can infect the genital tract, rectum, and throat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gonorrhoea can cause vaginal itching due to the inflammation and irritation it triggers in the vaginal tissues. Other symptoms may include unusual discharge, painful urination, and discomfort during sex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Mycoplasma<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/std-sti-testing\/mycoplasma\"><strong>Mycoplasma<\/strong><\/a>, specifically&nbsp;Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen), is another bacterium that can infect the genital tract, urethra, and rectum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mycoplasma can cause vaginal itching due to the inflammation and irritation it triggers in the vaginal tissues. Other symptoms might include unusual discharge, pain during urination, and discomfort during sex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Herpes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/page\/herpes\"><strong>Herpes<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/a>is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), which includes HSV-1 and HSV-2. It can affect the genital area, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/can-you-get-herpes-from-kissing\/\"><strong>mouth<\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/can-you-get-herpes-in-your-eye\/\"><strong>other parts of the body<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Herpes can cause vaginal itching when in its early phase, prior to a full blown attack, because it leads to inflammation and irritation in the affected areas. You might also notice that you go on to develop painful sores, blisters, and discomfort when you pee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Vaginal dryness and irritation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Vaginal dryness can often cause an itching sensation after sex. This itching sensation is often caused by unlubricated friction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initial dryness can be caused by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Skin conditions like eczema<\/li><li>Over washing or using certain feminine hygiene productsproducts \u2013 this is an extremely common cause of vaginal itching, because itching is the kind of symptom that makes you think you need to increase hygiene, when actually you may be damaging the natural barriers in the vagina<\/li><li>Changes in oestrogen levels, like those caused during menopause and childbirth<\/li><li>Lack of arousal during sex<\/li><li>Stress or depression<\/li><li>Medication side-effects, including from birth-control pills and anti-depressants<\/li><li>Health conditions, such as Sj\u00f6gren syndrome and diabetes<\/li><li>Irritants, such as perfume and certain kinds of soap<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re experiencing vaginal dryness during intercourse, try a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/shop\/products\/pasante-gentle-light-lube\"><strong>water-based lube<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;for gentle lubrication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Semen allergy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Seminal plasma hypersensitivity, also known as semen allergy, is a rare allergic reaction to proteins found in semen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might experience an allergic reaction with one partner but not another, or it could suddenly appear after years of being with the same partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms can affect any area that comes into contact with semen, such as the vulva, vagina, anus, and mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Typically, symptoms start within 10 to 30 minutes after exposure and can resemble those of vaginitis or certain STDs.
