{"id":650,"date":"2012-06-06T11:18:34","date_gmt":"2012-06-06T11:18:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.better2know.co.uk\/?p=650"},"modified":"2024-02-26T16:20:53","modified_gmt":"2024-02-26T16:20:53","slug":"gonorrhoea-infections-increased-by-25-last-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/gonorrhoea-infections-increased-by-25-last-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Gonorrhoea infections increased by 25% last year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>New cases of gonorrhoea rose by 25% in the UK in 2011.\u00a0 A report published by the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpa.org.uk\"> HPA<\/a> shows that gonorrhoea is now the second most common sexually transmitted bacterial infection in the UK behind Chlamydia.\u00a0 There were 20,965 new cases in 2011.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"518\" src=\"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/bacteria-8-1024x518.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7752\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/bacteria-8-1024x518.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/bacteria-8-300x152.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/bacteria-8-768x389.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/bacteria-8-1536x778.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.better2know.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/bacteria-8-2048x1037.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Gonorrhoea is becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics and health experts predict that new drugs will need to be found to continue to treat the infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Gwenda Hughes, head of STI surveillance at the HPA, said: \u201cWe anticipated some increase in diagnoses due to improvements in testing in recent years, but not on the scale seen here,\u201d she said. \u201cToo many people are putting themselves at risk of STIs and serious health problems by having unsafe sex.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If left untreated, gonorrhoea can cause serious abdominal pain, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) and can lead to infertility in women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sexual health campaigners are worried that as the responsibility for sexual health testing moves from the NHS to local authourities, fewer people will go for testing, increasing the prevalence of STIs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese figures are a salutary lesson,\u201d said Lisa Power, policy director of the Terrence Higgins Trust, the UK\u2019s leading sexual health charity. \u201cSexual health services have had a much lower profile in recent years and it\u2019s demonstrable what happens when you let up on informing the public about the risks. We\u2019ve been working hard with local authorities and our experience is that the services on offer will incredibly variable.
