What is a Better2Know Carbohydrate Deficient Transferrin (CDT) test?
Drinking beverages containing alcohol is widespread in the UK and around the world. Generally, when alcohol is consumed in moderation, it will not have any significant negative effects. Excessive alcohol consumption, however, can be very damaging to your health. This Carbohydrate Deficient Transferrin test will tell you if you are consuming excessive amounts of alcohol and can help you reduce your alcohol consumption back to safer limits. Excessive consumption of alcohol can damage your liver, your heart and other vital internal organs. It can also increase your risk of certain cancers and reduce your life expectancy.
Why consider a CDT test?
Drinking too much alcohol can cause an increase in certain types of transferrin which are deficient in carbohydrate. If you drink steadily and heavily for several weeks, the percentage of transferrin which is deficient in carbohydrate will rise indicating an excessive level of alcohol consumption. People who do not drink, or drink moderately, will have lower CDT levels in their blood. But people who drink four or more drinks a day, at least five days a week for 2 weeks prior to the test will have CDT at significantly greater levels. Intermittent or binge drinking can also increase CDT levels. Symptoms of excessive alcohol consumption can include:
- Yellowing Of Your Skin And Eyes
- Weight Gain
- Tingling Or A Sensation Of Numbness
- Heartburn
- Nausea and Vomiting
- Fatigue and Lack Of Energy
- Night Sweats
- Falling Sick More Often
