Cardiovascular Health Test (PLAC)

What is PLAC?

PLAC is a shortened name for the lipoprotein (combination of fat and protein) enzyme Lp-PLA2 that is found in blood. High levels of PLAC are closely linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke as they are an indicator of active cardiovascular disease rather than a theoretical risk of this. PLAC is carried in the blood to any fatty cholesterol deposit (plaque) lining the walls of the coronary arteries, causing an inflammatory response. This inflammation increases the chance of plaques breaking off and therefore causing a blockage of the coronary arteries (heart attack) or blood vessels within the brain (stroke).

Unlike other inflammatory markers that can be measured in blood, PLAC is a highly specific marker for coronary artery inflammation and so can provide a very useful insight into your cardiovascular health.

Why should I consider a PLAC test?

If you are concerned about your cardiovascular health, especially if you have medical risk factors such as:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Family history.

Or if you have lifestyle risks including:

  • Smoking
  • Being physically inactive
  • Unhealthy diet (high in fat and sugar)
  • Drink more than the recommended number of alcohol units.

A PLAC test could be your first step in taking control of your body.

What is the Better2Know home testing process?

Your discreetly packaged PLAC home testing kit will include a small, gold-topped tube for blood collection, a pre-printed pathology form, three-finger prick lancets, antiseptic skin wipes and a free return envelope. We will also send youclear, detailed instructions to you on how to safely take your sample. Once you have your blood sample, simply place it into the prepaid envelope provided and send it to our accredited laboratory for fast and efficient analysis.

When will my home testing kit arrive?

Home tests ordered before 4pm, Monday to Friday, will be sent out on the same day in the first class post. You can also upgrade to special delivery at checkout for a prioritised, tracked service.

How will I receive my test results?

Your home test results will be ready just two working days after your blood sample is received by the laboratory. Results are extremely accurate and 100% confidential. As soon as they become available, a member of our Patient Services team will contact you to discuss the results. You may prefer, however, to access your results directly and securely via the confidential patient login area of our website.

What should I do with my results?

Whilst an elevated PLAC result is worrying, you can do something about it. Knowing that there is an active disease, rather than just a risk, can help to focus your mind and encourage you to talk to a doctor about lifestyle changes and possible medications to lower your cholesterol. Lipid-lowering agents including statins are proven to reduce cardiovascular events.

Better2Know has a network of skilled doctors situated throughout the UK. We can arrange a private consultation either before your confidential blood test or after your results.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When will you send my kit to me?

If your order is placed before 4pm on a working day, then it will be sent the same day. Otherwise it will be sent on the next working day.

Q: Why do you need my email address?

Your Patient Services Manager, Louise Wright, will email you your login details to access your results, a confirmation your kit has been dispatched and finally when all your results are ready. We do not sell on or email you any other marketing materials, that is why we do not ask you to opt in or out of anything.

Q: Do I need to use my real name?

No, but the postman does need to know where to deliver the kit to. As long as you use a name that will get the kit to you, then we do not need your real name.

Q: What does the kit packaging look like?

It will arrive in plain white envelope with your typed name and address on it.

Q: What if I have any more questions?

You can email Louise by replying to one of the emails she has sent to you. She will do her best to answer them.
