Coeliac Disease Test

What is a Coeliac IgA Endomysial Antibody test?

Coeliac Disease is a disorder of the small intestine whereby the body has an immunological reaction to dietary gluten (found in wheat, rye and barley products). Usually someone who is Coeliac has a genetic predisposition to this. It is a common disorder thought to happen in around 1 in 300 people in Europe. Whilst the gold standard for diagnosing Coeliac Disease is by biopsy of the small intestine, there are several blood tests available that measure the presence of antibodies associated with Coeliac Disease. These are less invasive. One such antibody is IgA Endomysial Antibody which is found in the bloodstream of most people with coeliac disease and is, therefore, a very specific marker for the disease.

Why should I consider a Coeliac IgA Endomysial Antibody test?

Endomysial Antibodies produce intestinal swelling and if undetected damage to the lining of the small intestine, which in turn can prevent nutrients from food being absorbed correctly. If you have experienced any of the following symptoms, you should consider ordering this home test:

  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhoea or pale coloured stools
  • Cramping and/or bloating
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue

It is important that you have been eating gluten for a few weeks before this test as Endomysial Antibodies are only produced when people with Coeliac Disease have gluten in their diet.

What is the Better2Know home testing process?

With the Better2Know Coeliac Disease IgA Endomysial Antibody home test, you will only need to provide a single blood sample. This is collected using a finger prick lancet, rather than a needle into the vein. As well as three lancets, your kit will contain one gold-topped collection tube, a pathology form, wipes and a postage-paid return envelope. We will send you our sample collection guide with detailed instructions on how to safely take your blood sample. Please take care to follow these instructions carefully. Then, once you have your sample, place the tube into the envelope provided and send it to our accredited laboratory for fast, accurate analysis.

When will my home testing kit arrive?

If you order our Coealiac Disease IgA Endomysial Antibody home test before 4 pm on a weekday, we will dispatch your package that same day. Testing kits are sent by first class post. You can choose special delivery at checkout for a tracked, prioritised service.

How will I receive my test results?

Your Coealiac IgA Endomysial Antibody test results will be reported within two working days of your blood sample’s arrival at our laboratory. Your results and patient details will remain 100% confidential and will not be shared with any third parties without your consent. As soon as your results are available, a member of our Patient Services team will contact you personally. You can also check the progress of your results online at any time by logging into the secure patient area of our website.

What should I do with my results?

If your results indicate an intolerance, you should see a GP or nutritionist to discuss the implications of your result in more detail as further investigation may be needed. Better2Know can arrange a private telephone or face-to-face consultations either before your test or following your results. You can also take your results to a doctor or healthcare provider of your choice.

If you receive a negative result it does not necessarily exclude the possibility of Coeliac Disease. For example, patients with a milder sensitivity to gluten may have a negative result or in a very small proportion of cases, the body is unable to produce any IgA antibodies at all and therefore no Endomysial Antibody.

Q: Why do you need my email address?

Your Patient Services Manager, Louise Wright, will email you your login details to access your results, a confirmation your kit has been dispatched and finally when all your results are ready. We do not sell on or email you any other marketing materials, that is why we do not ask you to opt in or out of anything.

Q: Do I need to use my real name?

No, but the postman does need to know where to deliver the kit to. As long as you use a name that will get the kit to you, then we do not need your real name.

It will arrive in plain white envelope with your typed name and address on it.

Q: What if I have any more questions?

You can email Louise by replying to one of the emails she has sent to you. She will do her best to answer them.
