Covid-19 Test to Release for International Travel

Better2Know and our laboratory partners are listed on the Government website as registered private providers of Testing to Release for International Travel. Test to Release is an additional optional test, suitable if you are traveling to the UK from a non-red list country and you are not yet fully vaccinated.

By taking a Test to Release, you can reduce your self-isolation period from 10 days to 7 or 8 days, depending on whether you choose our Standard or Priority testing option:

  • Priority PCR swab. Results available within 24 hours after your sample arrives at the lab.
  • Standard PCR swab. Results available within 48 hours after your sample arrives at the lab.

When you order your test, you will receive a unique PIN number which should be entered on your passenger locator form before you return.

All Test to Release orders include Special Delivery. Your kit will be sent to you on Day 4 of your arrival back in the UK so that you can take the test on Day 5.

To order your test, simply click ‘Buy Now’ and select your chosen testing option. You can purchase your Test to Release in combination with Testing on Day 2 and Day 8 for a discounted price.

Please note that Test to Release is not available to those returning to Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland. It is your responsibility to check your nation’s Government guidance.


Am I eligible for Test to Release?

If you are returning from an non-red list country and you are not fully vaccinated, you are eligible to reduce your self-isolation period with our Test to Release.

This test is not suitable if you are not required to self-isolate for ten days on arrival into the UK because have been fully vaccinated by a vaccine approved by the UK Government.

What should I do when I arrive in England?

Once you arrive in the UK, you should go straight to your self-isolation address. Please follow Government guidelines on how to self-isolate. You can order your Test to Release as early as is convenient for you. By law, Better2Know cannot send your test to you until you have completed five full days in isolation.

When ordering your test, you will be required to state the date of your arrival in the UK, along with other details of your journey, so we will know when to send your test kit to you.

When will I receive my Test to Release kit?

Your kit will be sent by Special Delivery four days after you arrive in the UK. You should receive your kit the following day, which is the fifth day of your self-isolation. Please note that if your Day 4 falls on Sunday or Monday, your kit will be sent on Saturday.

When should I take my sample?

You should collect your sample on the fifth day of your self-isolation. For example, if you arrive in the UK on a Monday, you should collect your sample on Saturday. Please note that the day you arrive in the UK is Day 0.

What should I do when I receive my kit?

Your Test to Release kit includes everything you need to take your swab sample correctly. Please ensure that you read the instructions provided carefully. You can then collect your sample and post it to the laboratory on the same day, according to the instructions. Your kit includes a postage-paid envelope to return your sample to the lab.

When will my results be ready?

If you choose our Standard testing option, your results will be ready within 48 hours of your sample’s arrival at our laboratory. If you choose our Priority option, your results will be ready within 24 hours upon receipt of your sample at the lab.

How will I receive my results and the evidence I need to stop self-isolating?

As soon as your sample has been analysed at the laboratory, we will notify you by email. Your results will be available to view online in your secure patient area on our website. You can access this area using the log-in details provided to you at the time of booking. In your patient area, you will also be able to download a document which states your results and provides you with the evidence required to legally stop self-isolating.

If I test negative, can I stop self-isolating?

Yes, a negative result means that you are legally allowed to stop self-isolating. You should only continue to self-isolate if:

  • You develop symptoms of Covid-19
  • You have arrangements to go into hospital soon
  • You’ve been traced as coming into contact with someone who is positive
  • Someone you live with has tested positive.

What if I test positive for Covid-19?

If you test positive for Coronavirus, you must continue to self-isolate. The length of your continued self-isolation depends on whether or not you have symptoms. If you do have symptoms, you must continue to self-isolate for 10 days from when your symptoms began. If you do not have symptoms, you should remain in self-isolation for 10 days from the day you took your test.

Those who you live with or have travelled with should also self-isolate for 14 days from the date that you took your test.

Q: How do I know if I am taking my sample correctly?

Please follow the instructions provided in your kit. This ensures the accuracy of your test.

Q: How do I send my sample to the laboratory?

Inside your test kit, you will find a postage-paid, tracked return envelope which should be placed in a Royal Mail Priority post box. Please use the Royal Mail website to find your nearest Priority post box. Your pathology form must arrive at the lab with your sample.

Q: Will my test be able to detect the new variant of Covid-19?

Yes, all of our Covid-19 PCR swab tests can detect all known variants of the virus.


Delivery

Q: Does my order include Special Delivery?

Yes, your Test to Release includes tracked, Special Delivery and also includes return tracking to the lab.

Q: Does the turnaround time include transit times for the kit to reach me and the sample to reach the laboratory?

No, the given turnaround time is the usual time our laboratory requires to analyse your sample and determine your result.

Q: What will my kit packaging look like?

Your test kit will arrive in a plain envelope with your typed name and address.

Q: When will my kit be posted to me?

Your test kit will be posted to you on the fourth day of your self-isolation period, and you should receive your kit on the fifth day. Please note that, in accordance with Government guidelines, we cannot send your test to you earlier than this.

Q: Will I be able to track my sample to the laboratory?

Yes, your postage-paid return envelope is tracked by Royal Mail. Following the dispatch of your test kit, we will send you an email with your tracking number. Please contact Royal Mail if you are having problems tracking your parcel.


Confidentiality

Q: Why do you need my email address?

When you place your order, we will email your login details to access your results online. We will also send a confirmation email when your kit has been dispatched, and we will notify you when your results are ready. We do not email any marketing materials or sell on your details to any third parties. This is why we do not ask you to opt-in or opt-out.
