What is iron?
Iron is an essential nutrient that is needed in small amounts to help make red blood cells. It is also an integral part of the protein haemoglobin within those cells that carry oxygen around the body. The body cannot make iron and so needs to get this from a healthy diet or from supplements. Good sources of iron include dried fruit, meat, nuts, beans, whole grains and most dark-green, leafy vegetables.
A lack of dietary iron over a long period can lead to iron deficiency anaemia as the body’s stores become depleted. There is an increased need for iron during pregnancy and childhood or in situations of chronic blood loss such as women with heavy periods, stomach ulcers or colon cancer. In conditions such as Coeliac Disease, the body is unable to absorb dietary iron which can also lead to iron-deficiency anaemia. Iron overload whilst a less commonly occurring problem can have serious health implications, particularly for children.
Why should I consider an Iron Status profile?
Iron deficiency anaemia may not produce symptoms in the early stages as the body’s store depletes, but typical symptoms that develop over time include fatigue, weakness, dizziness, palpitations, headaches and pallor (pale skin). If you have any of these symptoms, are pregnant, have heavy periods or think you have coeliac disease, then a Better2Know Your Body home test will confirm if there are abnormalities in your iron levels.
What is the Better2Know Your Body home testing process?
The Better2Know Your Body Iron Status profile will evaluate the current store of iron in your system. This home test requires a single blood sample, which is taken using a finger prick lancet, without intravenous needles. Your home testing kit will contain a gold-topped, blood sample collection tube, three lancets, wipes, a pathology form and a free-to-return envelope. We will also email you with instructions on how to safely and correctly collect your sample. Once you have completed the procedure, place your sample in the prepaid envelope and send it for analysis at our CPA accredited, UK laboratory.
When will my home testing kit arrive?
Order this Better2Know Your Body home test before 4pm on a weekday, and we will dispatch your kit via first class post later that same day.
How will I receive my test results?
You will receive the results of your Iron Status profile the same day your sample arrives at our lab. Results are highly accurate and strictly confidential. A member of our expert health advisory team will contact you once your results are ready, unless you would prefer to contact us directly. In the meantime, you can check the progress of your results online by logging into the patient area of the Better2Know Your Body website.
What should I do with my results?
If the results of your Iron Status profile reveal abnormal iron levels, you should seek medical advice. Better2Know has a network of skilled doctors and nutritionists around the country. We can arrange telephone or face-to-face consultations to suit your schedule, either before your test or after your results. Your Better2Know Your Body doctor can prescribe the medication you need or recommend certain supplements or dietary modifications to help boost the levels of iron in your system.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: When will you send my kit to me?
If your order is placed before 4pm on a working day, then it will be sent the same day. Otherwise it will be sent on the next working day.
Q: Why do you need my email address?
Your Patient Services Manager, Louise Wright, will email you your login details to access your results, a confirmation your kit has been dispatched and finally when all your results are ready. We do not sell on or email you any other marketing materials, that is why we do not ask you to opt in or out of anything.
Q: Do I need to use my real name?
No, but the postman does need to know where to deliver the kit to. As long as you use a name that will get the kit to you, then we do not need your real name.
Q: What does the kit packaging look like?
It will arrive in plain white envelope with your typed name and address on it.
