Testosterone Test

What is testosterone?

Testosterone is one of the sex hormones. It is responsible for the development of male characteristics. For men, it is produced in the testes and regulates sex drive, controls bone mass, fat distribution, muscle mass, strength, development of facial hair and the production of red blood cells and sperm. Testosterone levels start to decline naturally in men after the age of 30. Abnormally low levels of testosterone can be caused by heavy alcohol consumption, liver disease and steroid use and may lead to erectile dysfunction (ED) and/ or infertility, loss of muscle mass and changes in body fat distribution. A low testosterone level in boys of pubescent age can delay puberty.

While testosterone is the primary sex hormone produced by men, women also produce small amounts of testosterone in the ovaries. Excessive levels of testosterone in women can lead to hirsutism (excessive body hair), head hair thinning, weight gain, menstrual irregularities and are often associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). A high level of testosterone in girls of pubescent age can delay the onset of puberty and the start of the menstrual cycle.

Why should I consider a testosterone test?

This blood test is for men and women who want to determine their testosterone levels. For men worried about ED and/or decreased sex drive or women with unusual symptoms as above, or a concern about PCOS, the Better2Know testosterone home test could help to inform you as to the cause of the issue.

What is the Better2Know home testing process?

Better2Know’s highly accurate testosterone home test uses a single blood sample to measure the amount of testosterone in your blood. Inside your testing kit, you will find a gold-topped tube and three lancets for blood collection, a prepaid envelope for you to return your sample, wipes and a pathology form. Better2Know will also send you detailed sample collection instructions. It is important that you follow these instructions carefully to safely and correctly perform your test. Once the test is complete, simply send your sample to our accredited laboratory in the envelope provided.

When will my home testing kit arrive?

If you complete your order before 4 pm, Monday to Friday, Better2Know will dispatch your home test the same day via first class post as standard. You can also choose Special Delivery at checkout which is a priority, tracked and signed for service.

How will I receive my test results?

Your private and confidential home test results will be available just one working day after your sample arrives at our accredited laboratory. Test results are reported in the secure patient login area of the Better2Know website. We will send you an email when all your results are ready.

What should I do with my results?

If your home test reveals abnormal testosterone levels for your gender and age, you should see a GP or healthcare professional. It could be that you need some further investigation or specific treatment. If you are worried about your test results, Better2Know can arrange private consultations with doctors across the UK. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When will you send my kit to me?

If your order is placed before 4pm on a working day, then it will be sent the same day. Otherwise it will be sent on the next working day.

Q: Why do you need my email address?

Your Patient Services Manager, Louise Wright, will email you your login details to access your results, a confirmation your kit has been dispatched and finally when all your results are ready. We do not sell on or email you any other marketing materials, that is why we do not ask you to opt in or out of anything.

Q: Do I need to use my real name?

No, but the postman does need to know where to deliver the kit to. As long as you use a name that will get the kit to you, then we do not need your real name.

Q: What does the kit packaging look like?

It will arrive in plain white envelope with your typed name and address on it.

Q: What if I have any more questions?

You can email Louise by replying to one of the emails she has sent to you. She will do her best to answer them.
