Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) affect people all over the world. But what do the numbers say? In this blog, Better2Know explores some statistics published by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Worldwide STI statistics infographic.

The World Health Organisation reports that globally:

  • Over 1 million people acquire a sexually transmitted infection every day
  • 376 million people annually contract Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Syphilis or Trichomonas
  • More then 290 million women have an HPV infection and virtually all cervical cancer cases are linked to HPV infections
  • There are around 570,000 new cervical cancer cases and 300,000 deaths each year
  • More than 500 million people have the virus that causes genital herpes
  • Many STIs can increase the risk of HIV acquisition three-fold or more

STIs have a far-reaching impact on sexual and reproductive health all over the world, so much so that it is sometimes difficult to put such large numbers into perspective.

According to the above statistics, in the last ten minutes alone, six women have died from cervical cancer, and almost 7000 people have acquired an STI.

These shocking figures indicate just how widespread this issue is. How many of these people will get tested after acquiring an STI? How many will unknowingly pass an STI onto their next partner? How many cervical cancer cases could have been prevented?

Taking responsibility for your own sexual health and ensuring all partners are also tested and treated is critical in order to prevent further STI transmission.
