A new morning after pill that can be taken up to 5 days after sexual intercourse is being trialled in Plymouth. The traditional morning after pill needs to be taken within 72 hours of having sexual intercourse.

The pill – EllaOne – can be taken by anyone over the age of 18 120 hours after sex, and costs £20. Campaigners against the morning after pill say there is no evidence making the pill available has decreased unwanted pregnancy, and just promotes casual sex, particularly among young women.

However, a pill available for longer helps women who are nervous about approaching someone for help or believe that an unwanted pregnancy will not happen to them, by giving them longer to ask for help.

Better2Know is here to help anyone who has had unprotected sex, and along with contraception you must consider your sexual health and get tested for STDs and STIs or you could risk your future fertility and health.
