Gardnerella is very common infection which can be transmitted sexually. It is a naturally occurring bacteria in women. When a colony gets out of control, it can cause irritation, discomfort, pain when urinating, discharge, unpleasant smells. It can also be passed on to a male or female partner. There are no recorded instances of gardnerella being passed on by a man to a sexual partner.
Like any STI, if you have one, you are more likely to get another one, including HIV, as your body is more vulnerable in the genital area. Untreated gardnerella is unlikely to lead to long term consequences in men. In women, it can be a common cause of bacterial vaginosis, which is a bacterial infection of the vagina which can lead to unpleasant smells and discharge and discomfort in the genital area.
It is important to treat Gardnerella if you are pregnant, or want to be pregnant, or your partner is or wants to be pregnant. It should also be treated if you have any symptoms. Unlike some other STIs, gardnerella can go away on its own, and does not need medication. A gardnerella infection is also easily treated with a single dose of antibiotics.
