HIV RNA PCR Testing

This test can detect the presence of the HIV virus just 10 days after any potential exposure. This test is if you are concerned about a recent sexual encounter or other incident. We can help you to get the earliest possible results for your HIV concerns. Our trained sexual health advisors can answer any questions that you have, and can support you throughout your testing and waiting for your results.

PCR stands for 'Polymerase Chain Reaction' which is a testing method that extracts and amplifies the genetic material of an organism. This tests for the presence of the viral RNA of HIV 1, so the window period is shorter compared with other types of HIV and STI testing. This means it can provide the earliest possible indication of infection.

This test is slightly less sensitive than the 28 Day HIV Duo test. So, if you choose this test we would recommend that you have a follow up HIV Duo test after waiting at least 28 days. This HIV test is available with results the same day as your sample is received in our accredited testing laboratory.

This HIV 1 RNA test is also available as part of our Early Detection Screen which tests for HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. The results of the Early Detection Screen will be ready just 3 working days from when your sample is received in our laboratory.
